Eduardo Sarabia’s exhibition of painting, drawing and sculpture emerges from his ideas of urban conceptualism. At the center of the show is a customized handmade couch with upholstery portraying an idealized city, with beaches and mountains surrounding the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles. Another work portrays three animals, each of which is named after a drug that is accessible and common on the streets. Sarabia’s observations of excess and the subcultures of areas like Compton, Inglewood and Long Beach City is expressed in another sculpture, Drifting on a Memory, which functions as a parade float. Finally, a series of acrylic paintings of elaborate vines refer to a common practice of marking wall space in East Los Angeles, used commonly to prevent graffiti and vandalism.
Eduardo Sarabia was born in Los Angeles in 1976, where he lives and works. A 1998 graduate of the Otis College of Art and Design, this marks his first solo exhibition.
